It's cool to get recognition for your design. Even appreciation is great. But every now and then something you design has the potential for reaching pop culture super-stardom. That's what happened to Betty Willis when she designed the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign on Las Vegas Boulevard in 1959. Since then the sign has been featured, photoed, reproduced, mimicked, spoofed and put on every piece of souvenir swag available.
Betty passed away earlier this year, and we wanted to acknowledge her and point out the cultural potential that exists in bold statements of sign and art design. Betty's design influence goes beyond this one sign. She is credited with being a major influence of the neon and illuminated sign mystique that Las Vegas became known for.
Drive Carefully, and Come Back Soon, Betty.
